At first you may think that a Wireless Network is completely different from a standard network but this is far from the truth. The basic networking infrastructure still needs to be in place. Wireless doesn't replace any of infrastructure requirements, except the need of most cables, but does open up security issues(See below).
A few of the major benefits of a wireless network includes the reduction in total facility wiring, a more flexible node to node placement and the ability to move individual machine tools without changing the wiring infrastructure. This is very important to a manufacturing enterprise implementing a lean factory where assets need to be efficiently utilized and a quick response to changes is vital.
Wireless doesn't have to be a security risk if normal security precautions are taken. If your network is already security based nobody can enter without a password, this also applies to wireless. If you have not setup your network for security you can set it up for wireless security with just a little effort.
